FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a minimally invasive technique in which individual follicles are extracted from the donor area — typically the back and sides of the scalp — and implanted into areas of thinning or loss.
Because follicles are taken one by one, there is no linear scar. Only tiny extraction points remain, which heal naturally, and most patients return to normal activities within a few days.
Both shaven and unshaven FUE hair transplants can achieve natural, long-lasting results. The right approach depends on your donor area, hair length, treatment size, lifestyle and how discreet you want your recovery to be.

Best suited for patients who want maximum access, efficient graft placement and strong coverage across larger treatment areas.

A discreet option for patients who prefer to keep their existing hairstyle and make recovery less noticeable.
During your complimentary consultation, your Berkeley surgeon will talk you through both options and design a hairline around your features, age and future hair loss. Using 3D planning technology, you can preview what may be possible before we recommend the FUE approach best suited to your hair, lifestyle and long-term result.
An FUE hair transplant is a carefully planned procedure, usually completed in one day. Each stage is designed to protect graft quality, preserve the donor area and create natural-looking density with minimal downtime.
We prepare your scalp, assess hair direction and angle, and administer local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout your procedure.
Before treatment begins, your scalp is cleaned and prepared and the donor and recipient areas are assessed for hair direction, angle and density. Local anaesthetic is then administered so the procedure is comfortable and pain-free from start to finish, with your surgical team checking in with you throughout.
Follicles are removed individually using a specialist micropunch, then carefully sorted and prepared to protect graft quality before implantation.
During this stage, individual follicles are carefully removed from the donor area using specialist micropunch tools designed to minimise visible scarring and protect the surrounding tissue. Each graft is then examined, sorted and prepared according to its quality, thickness and number of hairs. This careful preparation helps your surgical team select the right grafts for the right areas, supporting natural-looking density, softer hairline design and long-lasting results.
Recipient sites are created with precision using Berkeley Diamond Sapphire Blades™, before each graft is placed to follow your natural hair direction, density and growth pattern.

This meticulous placement is what delivers a natural hairline design and results that blend seamlessly as they mature.

At Berkeley Hair Clinic, FUE hair transplant pricing starts from £3,499. Your final quote depends on the number of grafts required, the area being restored, donor hair availability, hair characteristics and whether shaven or unshaven FUE is most suitable.
Every quote is transparent and based on clinical need, not fixed packages or a one-size-fits-all approach. During your complimentary consultation, your surgeon will assess your hair loss, discuss your goals and explain what may be possible before providing a clear, personalised price.
The cost of FUE reflects more than the number of grafts. It includes the planning behind your result, from hairline design and donor management to graft preparation, placement precision and clinical support before, during and after treatment.
It also includes the details that make your treatment day feel calmer and more personal, including your choice of premium food and refreshments and a personalised theatre experience with your preferred music or film.
Aftercare is included in your treatment price and continues for more than a year after your procedure. You can contact the Berkeley team day or night with any questions or concerns, and return for review appointments or check-ups where needed. You are not left to manage recovery alone - we stay close throughout healing, growth and your final result.

Good preparation helps make your FUE hair transplant and recovery as smooth as possible. Before treatment, your clinical team will guide you on hair washing, medications, alcohol, exercise and what to avoid in the days leading up to your procedure, so you arrive fully prepared and know what to expect.
Like any surgical procedure, Follicular Unit Excision (FUE) comes with potential risks and side effects. Your surgeon will discuss the risks and side effects further with you during your consultation.
Overharvesting – removing too many grafts from the donor area can create visible thinning or patchiness
Poor technique outside the Safe Donor Area (SDA) – can cause permanent damage and unnatural results
Unlicensed clinics (black market procedures) – increase the risk of scarring, poor growth, and uncorrectable damage
Minor scalp cysts or small bumps at extraction sites
Mild infections that can be managed with proper care
Temporary hair shedding (telogen effluvium) of existing native hairs, which typically regrow over several months
Redness, swelling, or mild discomfort around the treated areas
At Berkeley, safety and ethical planning guide every FUE procedure. Your surgeon will explain any individual risks before treatment, and our team remains available throughout recovery to answer questions, review concerns and help manage any temporary side effects.
Following the right aftercare guidance is important for protecting your newly transplanted grafts, supporting healing and achieving the best possible result. Our clinical team will guide you through each stage, from the first few days after your FUE procedure through to your ongoing hair care routine, so you can recover with confidence.
During your consultation, your Berkeley surgeon will explain what to expect after FUE and how to care for both the donor and transplanted areas. You’ll receive personalised guidance on washing, medication, activity and your return to normal hair care, so you understand each stage of recovery and how to support healthy long-term growth.
Suitability depends on your hair loss pattern and its stability, donor area quality and likely future progression. Our surgeons assess all of these during your free consultation.
Most treatments are completed in a single day and take between five and seven hours, depending on graft numbers.
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so the area is numb throughout. Any tenderness afterwards is typically mild and short-lived.
New growth usually becomes noticeable after several months, with full results developing between six and twelve months.
Transplanted follicles are taken from areas genetically resistant to hair loss, so the restored hair is permanent.
Most patients can return to light daily activities within a few days. Redness, swelling and small scabs may remain visible for around one to two weeks while the scalp heals.
FUE does not create a linear scar. Individual follicles are removed through tiny circular incisions, which typically leave small dot-like scars that become difficult to notice once healed.
The number of grafts required depends on the extent of your hair loss, your desired density and the quality of your donor area. Your surgeon will recommend an appropriate graft number following an assessment.
Some transplanted hairs may shed during the first few weeks after treatment. This is a normal part of the process, with new growth usually beginning to appear over the following months.
From consultation and hairline planning to surgery, recovery and aftercare, your treatment is supported by an experienced surgical and patient care team focused on natural-looking results and a smooth, well-supported experience.
